How workplace chaplains connect with questions of tax, business ethics and the wider issues of the Economy.
The role of the Workplace Chaplain begins with seeking to care and support people at work. In order to do this effectively it is important to understand the issues people face – as employers and employees – and sometimes to challenge and question the way we all do business.
This has been highlighted this year in the changes in our economy post COVID and BREXIT, and as a result of the war in Ukraine. As consumers, as well as workers, how do we make sense of issues of taxation, debt, integrity in business and politics, and how do we as Workplace Chaplains connect these issues with the conversations we have with people we meet in the workplaces we visit?
This is the subject for this WCM UK online mini-conference, which will be led by speakers from ECCR, the Ecumenical Council for Corporate Responsibility.
The forerunner of WCM UK – the Industrial Mission Association – was a founding partner in ECCR in 1989. In its early years ECCR promoted shareholder action to seek to hold to account companies for the impact of their activities around the globe. It has continued with this campaigning and educational focus and today runs two programmes – Money Makes Change (MMC) and Church Action for Tax Justice (CATJ). MMC seeks to help Christians and Churches make informed, ethical decisions about how their money is used in the global economy – connecting their faith and finances to shape a fairer, greener world. CATJ campaigns alongside other organisations, for a fairer tax system, and the reform of tax regulation.
Led by ECCR’s Executive Director, Sarah Edwards, this session will provide an introduction to the work of ECCR, and help chaplains be more confident in engaging with those they visit on some of these bigger questions of our economy that impact, sometimes every profoundly, with the work people do.
The cost is £5 per person for members and for those who are part of a workplace chaplaincy team which has Team Membership, or £10 for non-members.
WORKPLACE CHAPLAINCY MISSION UK, (WCM UK) is a national network of workplace chaplains and others engaged in connecting faith, work and the economy.
We are run by our members and keep in touch with one another, produce training resources and run conferences and events to promote learning and the development of the Church’s mission in the economy. We seek to raise the profile of Workplace Mission and chaplaincy and advocate for a more just, equitable and sustainable economy.
